Potekglass: Summer Camp, Guided Tour, and Torch Workshops

Potekglass is excited to announce a summer full of artistic exploration and learning! From our Fusing, Casting, and Torch Summer Camp to the highly anticipated Cracking the Kiln Code workshop, we have something for everyone eager to deepen their glass art skills.

This June, join us for a unique opportunity with guest artist Aldo Moroni, who will guide you through a tour of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts’ Chinese and South Asian Art Galleries on June 2nd. After a lunch break, students will return to Potekglass to create their own funerary vessels, learning about the cultural significance of these forms. Aldo’s work challenges the boundaries of social art, allowing participants to engage directly with the creative process, making this a truly immersive experience.

In addition to the special event with Aldo Moroni, we are also showcasing the incredible work of Kimiake Higuchi and Shin-ichi Higuchi. This Japanese husband-and-wife team is renowned for their work in pate de verre, a technique that allows precise color placement in glass through the use of molds. Their inspiring work, which often draws on natural themes, has earned them a place in major glass collections worldwide.

Summer Camp Announcement: Our weeklong Summer Camp is a hands-on experience combining art, math, and science! Students will solve real-world problems by learning how to melt glass, create molds, and explore the chemistry of glassmaking. Malcom’s decades of teaching experience will ensure that kids have a fun and educational time, learning everything from the volume of glass needed to fill molds to understanding how oxygen affects fire intensity.

Other Upcoming Events:

  • Cracking the Kiln Code (June 18-22): This intense 4-day workshop dives into the fundamentals of kilnforming, providing you with essential firing schedules and specific projects to improve your kiln work.

  • Art-a-Whirl (May 18-20): Join us for this exciting event, where Potekglass will be showcasing special prices on art, classes, and supplies. Malcom will also be demonstrating torch techniques on Sunday, May 20th, at noon. Don’t miss your chance to see him in action before we move to our new Lowry Avenue location this fall.
