Art, Classes, and Inspiring Projects

This August, Potekglass continues to inspire with exciting projects, upcoming glass classes, and notable art pieces that reflect on important issues. Join us for a look into Floyd, a special piece in our shop, and explore our classes and promotions for the month!

Art in the Shop: "Floyd" in Florida
We are honored to share that Floyd, a meaningful piece, has been accepted into the 29th Annual Emerald Coast National Juried Exhibition. This piece, which will be shown at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center Galleries in Niceville, FL from August 27 to October 29, reflects Malcom Potek's meditation on the tragic death of George Floyd and its enduring impact. The artwork, inspired by a protest poster inked by Kara van Wyk, captures grief and hope, offering a permanent tribute to George Floyd's memory and the ongoing fight against systemic racism.

Artist in the World: Flavie Audi
Flavie Audi, a French multimedia artist, is known for her dreamlike glass pieces that explore surreal landscapes. With a background in glassmaking, Audi incorporates dichroic glass, softening edges and creating a sense of fluidity. Her works, such as LCD (Lithic Crystalline Deposit) 4 and Fluid Ether 2, continue to bridge the gap between the tangible and the digital, inviting viewers into an ethereal world of color and form.

Upcoming Classes at Potekglass
Potekglass is thrilled to offer a variety of new and exciting classes this month, ranging from beginner to advanced levels. Whether you’re looking to try out torchwork, kiln-forming, or learn new glass-making techniques, we’ve got something for you!

• Free Glass Friday
  Time: 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  Join us for a free glass session. We’ll provide 4 hours on our equipment, including free glass supplies, and set you up with student tools. Come and enjoy some creative time working with different types of glass such as Italian soft glass, borosilicate, and Bullseye glass.

• Creating Positives
  Sept 15 - Nov 17
  Time: 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
  Cost: $650 | Member Price: $585
  This advanced class, led by Elizabeth Coleman and Malcom Potek, focuses on creating custom molds using clay and glass. Students will learn how to fuse glass into their molds and explore glass flow, color-reactivity, and pattern making techniques.

• Kiln Try-iT!
  August 28
  Time: 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
  Cost: $95 | Member Price: $69
  A great class for beginners, students will learn the basics of kiln-forming, including cutting patterns from sheet glass and working with frit to create a beautiful glass ring dish.

Retail in the Shop: Mandrels
Mandrels are essential tools for beadmaking. At Potekglass, we offer a variety of sizes, including 1/16", 3/32", 1/8", and 1/4". Mandrels are available for purchase in-store and online.
