New Classes, Loyalty Punch Cards, Tom Sourlis, and The State Fair

August is here, and Potekglass is packed with exciting news! From new classes to a Loyalty Punch Card program, a spotlight on Tom Sourlis and his unique glasswork, and the upcoming State Fair participation, there’s something for everyone this month at Potekglass. Whether you’re a seasoned glass artist or a beginner, this month offers plenty of opportunities to learn, create, and explore the world of glass art.

Art in the Shop: "Trade Beads" & Malcom’s Glass Beads

In our gallery, we’re showcasing trade beads—a staple in barter systems across cultures for 40,000 years. Available by bead or strand, these historic pieces bring beauty and culture into your art projects.

Malcom Potek’s glass beads are also on display, featuring a range of unique designs created using a variety of techniques, including lampwork and fused glass. Want to try making your own beads? Check out our Try-iT! Torch classes where Malcom teaches how to create beads, paperweights, and other glass art.

Artist in the World: Tom Sourlis

Tom Sourlis has made a name for himself with his intricate fused glass work and his pioneering efforts in thin fusing. Working alongside his partner Twyla Butler, Sourlis creates gossamery sculptural pieces that push the boundaries of glass fusing. His work calls attention to the delicate nature of glass, often blending the boundaries of traditional art and modern innovation.

Events: Potekglass at the MN State Fair

Get ready for Glass on a Stick! Potekglass will be at the Minnesota State Fair on September 2nd and 3rd. Come visit us at the Creative Arts Building to watch live glass cutting and soldering demos. What are we making? You’ll have to come and see! We’ll be there from 9 AM to 7 PM each day, so don’t miss out on this fun and creative event.

Upcoming Classes at Potekglass

August brings new opportunities to enhance your glass skills. Whether you’re new to stained glass or looking to explore torchwork, we have something for everyone.

Beginning Stained Glass
September 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th
Cost: $115 (non-members), $103.50 (members)
This 4-week course teaches the basics of stained glass using the copper foil method. Learn pattern preparation, cutting, grinding, soldering, and framing.

Glass Menagerie Tortoise
August 24th, 5 PM
Cost: $95 (non-members), $85.50 (members)
In this fun class, create a glass tortoise using borosilicate glass. Learn how to shape and strike colors, and understand key techniques in torchwork.

Try-iT! Basics from Boron
July 29th
Cost: $95 (non-members), $85.50 (members)
This class introduces borosilicate glass sculpting, where you’ll learn to make a paperweight, create an icicle ornament, and experiment with glassblowing.

Rendering Mosaics with Katie Trent
Nov 4th, 11th, 18th, Dec 2nd
Cost: $195 (non-members), $175.50 (members)
Learn how to render a mosaic based on your favorite photograph or painting. Katie Trent will guide you through assembling and interpreting your image with tiny glass pieces.

Open Studio: Practice Your Skills!

Every month, Potekglass hosts Open Studio Sessions where you can use our kiln, torch, and mosaic equipment to practice and create. Bring your own tools or rent a kit and enjoy 4 hours of studio time. Space is limited, so please reserve your spot ahead of time.
