Jenny Lind Elementary 2011-2015

The goal of this residency was to start a legacy project for years to come and to have 4th graders build the public art project under the theme “Good Neighbors”. Through 5 meetings we talked about what it means to be a good neighbor, learned a little about the history of our neighborhood, and looked at ways that the first peoples to inhabit the land expressed themselves in beadworked bandolier bags.

The project also highlighted real-life math problems.  How large is each tile sections?  To find this we needed to find the perimeter of our window, and then the area.  Divided by the number of participants, we had our size. It is important to remember that this is a group project on a grand scale.  All the images you see, the patterns on the border, and the construction was accomplished by 4th grade students.
