Art in the Shop: Malcom in Grand Marais

Cracking the Kiln Code coming June 18-22

Cracking the Kiln Code is a core part of the Potekglass Curriculum, where Malcom shares his decades of expertise in a fun, accessible way. This is a can't miss for fusing fanatics and beginners alike.

Students will explore the dynamic range of glass kiln work as they create a variety of projects including bowls, tiles, and small sculptures.

Malcolm will teach various techniques for creating fused glass pieces and incorporating pattern and bead bars, along with fiber molds. Students will gain a foundational knowledge of warm glass and how to use various heating schedules to achieve a successful end result.

Art in the World: Karen LaMonte

Karen LaMonte: Monumental Sculpture

Karen LaMonte believes the the primacy of material, concept and craftsmanship. She has a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her works are widely held in museum collections and have been recognized for excellence by many institutions such as the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award. She lives and works in the Czech Republic.

In September 2017, LaMonte was selected as the Specialty Glass Artist-in-Residence for 2018. This residency is a joint program of The Corning Museum of Glass and Corning Incorporated that gives the selected artist access to specialty glass materials, scientists, and curators to experiment and explore new areas of their practice.

Earth Day Flower Power

Sharpen your Borosilicate color skills in this 5-hour weekend class

Learn the intricacies of stamping and striking Boro color while lampworking flowers on the torch. Working with rods and frits, students will learn color application, blending and efficient use.

In addition to becoming savvy with color, this class will cover more fundamentals of flame dynamics and hot-glass sculpture. This beginner class is open to anyone with previous torch safety experience through a Potekglass Try-it! class or equivalent.

Open Torch this Thursday

Sharpen your lampworking skills with Potekglass 3x a month

Friendly reminder that this Thursday, April 5, is our first Open Torch of the month. Four hours of torch time for only $35 ($25 for members)! Sign up here.

Potekglass offers Open Torch on the First Thursday from 5:00-9:00, Second Saturday from 1:30-5:30, and Third Wednesday from 5:00-9:00. Complete calendar here.

Anyone with previous torch experience or a Potekglass Try-it! class is welcome to join. We always have a friendly Host on hand to help you practice skills and details you may forgotten.
